Baby and Child Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and Paracetamol (Calpol and Panadol) Equivalents Abroad
This article is for when you are abroad and want to find a familiar baby and children’s liquid medicine such as Tylenol (as it is known in the U.S.A) or Calpol as known in the U.K. and Panadol. We are not medically trained but have researched what the names are of the equivalents to make it easier for you to ask.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and paracetamol (Panadol) and Calpol (liquid paracetamol) are the same medication. These medicines are chemically the same: C8H9NO2. In the U.S.A and Japan most people know it as Acetaminophen and as paracetamol in U.K, Europe, Australia etc, although brand names like Tylenol, Calpol, Panadol vary.
The below names are current equivalents around the world. As always, discuss this with the local pharmacist before using.
U.K
Calpol. Comes in liquid form for infants and for older children. Chewable tablets are also available for those over 6. Can buy in local supermarkets and pharmacies.
U.S.A
Tylenol: Can buy in liquid form for infants and children. Can buy in pharmacies and supermarkets, CVS, Walmart, Walgreens etc.
Australia:
Dymadon Can buy for infants and older children in liquid form in strawberry or orange flavour.
Panadol in liquid form for infants and older children in cherry, orange or strawberry flavour with chewable tablets also available.
Panamax Elixir for infants and young children. Not recommended for infants under 1 month.
Canada
Tylenol
France
Doliprane. The equivalent of Calpol in France is Doliprane which is only available from pharmacies. You will need to know your babies weight so they can accurately work out the dosage.
Germany
Calpol – but needs to bought from a pharmacy. Most medicines are not available in the supermarkets and over the counter is expensive.
Greece
Depon Syrup is the equivalent of Calpol. Good to Know: The Greek pharmacists are highly trained and can dispense many medicines that are only available on prescription in other countries.)
Italy
Tachipirina: Tachipirina syrup is used for adults and children weighing over 7.2 kg (around 5-6 months old) For children weighing less than 7.2 kg there are specific forms of Tachipirina on the market, in particular, Tachipirina 100 mg/ml drops, solution and Tachipirina for newborns 62.5 mg, suppositories that can be used from 3.2 kg. Feedback is that it is NOT pleasant tasting!
Singapore
Children’s and infants panadol is available from stores like Watsons. Suitable from aged 3 months+
Spain
Aperital is the paracetamol equivalent.
South Africa
Calpol: Widely available in stores such as Clicks
and alternatively Panado Paediatric syrup.
Thailand
Sara or Tylenol available in supermarkets and 7-elevens.
